Early years

 

During their time in the Early Years, our children are introduced to a range of activities and materials designed to nurture their sense of independence and self-esteem. Through these activities concentration, confidence and perseverance develop naturally.

We provide children with an environment where they can be a positive and valued member of a small community; where their help and collaboration is needed, encouraged and appreciated. They learn to care for others with kindness and gentleness.

The opportunities that our children meet enable them to develop a number of competencies, skills and concepts across several areas of learning.

 

Junior phase

 

The junior phase celebrates childhood. Full of expectation, excitement and enquiry, it builds on the natural enthusiasm of children to ensure that all achieve their best.

 

There is no differentiation between hard work and enjoyment. Quite the opposite! Children are encouraged to develop a love of learning for its own sake. They experience the joy of aiming high and achieving well, both within the academic curriculum and beyond it.

 

The junior phase has a challenging, broad and balanced curriculum. Emphasis is given to developing key skills in English and Mathematics. These act as a solid foundation for future learning.

 

Our adult directed activities follow the topic approach where we focus on a different topic each term. The aim of this is to give context to the academic work, to give an integrated approach to learning and to develop enthusiasm for learning.

 

Great care is taken to ensure that the children enjoy their work - we believe that hard work and fun are not mutually exclusive, indeed they need to be as one if children are to learn effectively now and in their future.

 

Each class is under the direction of a class teacher who takes academic and pastoral responsibility for the children in his or her class. All classes are ably supported by Teaching Assistants.

 

Careful assessment and monitoring ensures that each child fulfills her or his full potential. Teaching styles are dynamic and flexible to match individual learning styles and to develop a true love of learning.

 

Senior phase

 

We strive to produce excellent results at IGCSE, and to provide a wide range of opportunities to develop as an individual. A close and supportive environment makes for a rich and rewarding educational experience.

 

Pastoral care

 

Children are at the centre of all we do. We recognise and celebrate the value of childhood. Children thrive with clear boundaries, firm direction, adults and peers who share in the joy of discovery and value the part that all individuals have to play in our community.

Although every child has a class teacher who is responsible for their well-being, all staff contribute to the pastoral care of each child. Pastoral care does not exist in a vacuum. It is not simply an "additional extra." It is interwoven with academic success and each child's sense of self-worth.

 

Relationships between our pupils and staff are warm and open; our staff believe in every young person and encourage a growth mindset – believing that everything is possible if you give it a go and work hard enough!

 

We offer care with a light touch, so that children have a sense of independence and freedom to take responsibility for themselves, but at the same time know that they are guided and looked after. Our aim is to foster a network of good relationships; staff who observe changes in mood, behaviour, pattern of work; children who look after each other.

 

Our school community is inclusive and celebrates diversity at every opportunity. Numerous faiths, races and backgrounds are represented here and self-expression is also encouraged.

 

Through our PSHE programme we aim to help our children prepare for life beyond the classroom and the complex and sometimes difficult choices they will face. With this in mind we hope to give them opportunities to take responsibility, to feel positive about themselves, to participate, to make real choices and decisions, to meet and work with people, to develop relationships, to consider social and moral dilemmas, to find information and to prepare for change.

 

Learning development and Special Educational Needs

 

It is our view that all children have special educational needs unique to them and to their stage of development. We recognise in some cases these needs require additional support to enable the children to move to the next stage of development.

 

Thoughtful and effective assessment, parental involvement and a variety of teaching and learning styles appropriate to the needs of the individual and the subject matter are integral to the planning of educational provision for all pupils. The COPE Centre works together with staff supporting children with specific learning disabilities or those who require additional help. This is offered individually, in small groups or within the classroom.

 

Houses

 

The warmth and strength of our school community is enhanced by our highly successful House system. Each child is attached to one of four Houses and this helps to foster a strong sense of belonging.

 

The system provides a basic framework for Inter House activities and healthy competition. Involvement in House events connects pupils to school life and helps them feel worthwhile members of their community. House events are wide ranging and include – House Music, House Dance, sports events, public speaking, social occasions and charity fund raising events.

 

Our house system fosters an immensely powerful and strong sense of community amongst our young people and the vertical structure within the houses means that pupils of all ages integrate with one another and older pupils can share their experiences and help and support the younger pupils.

 

School trips

 

Throughout their time at the school, children enjoy the opportunity to go on outings. These are often linked to curriculum topics, enhancing what is taught in the classroom. Equally, the outings may be taken simply because they are interesting and there to be enjoyed.

All children go on residential trips during their school career. Seen as part of and an extension to the curriculum, these trips are designed to offer new challenges and develop self-confidence and personal responsibility. By encountering achievable challenges our students have the chance to succeed in areas that they previously thought were beyond them.

 

Visits are organized carefully according to our strict guidelines, to ensure that students and their families are fully informed. All due checks are carried out to ensure students' safety and enjoyment.

 

Regular visiting speakers share their expertise and experiences and broaden children's access to many topics. Each term concludes with a number of Enrichment Days in which the children enjoy taking part in unusual and engaging activities off-timetable.

 

Our local community

 

Community action is an important part of school life. We are proud of the contribution that pupils and their families make to a wide range of events that are organised at house, year group and the whole school level. Each year a significant sum is distributed to a range of local, national and international causes. Our community work helps our pupils to develop an awareness of the need in the local, national and international settings; to respond to identified needs both as individuals and as groups; to support (and at the top end of the school organise) a range of events that generate funds for a designated cause and to develop a sense of community.
